Adult Orthodontics

Traditional braces may bring back not-so-great memories of junior high, but when you imagine adult orthodontics, you need to rethink that picture! These days, there are lots of orthodontic options for adult patients who want to straighten their teeth. Lots of adults never had a chance to get their teeth straightened as teenagers and these patients show up regularly at Fine Dentistry of Downtown Orlando to get a straighter smile now that they’re old enough to really benefit from it.

Twenty years ago, it was rare for adults to seek orthodontic treatment, but today that’s simply not true anymore. As the treatment options have expanded to include innovations like Invisalign, our adult patient base has also expanded. These days, about 50% of our patients are adults. They come to Fine Dentistry of Downtown Orlando to fix everything from gaps between teeth and overcrowding to issues with their crossbite. Anything is possible though sometimes the treatment plan is different for adults than it would be for teens.

Traditional Braces

Traditional braces are used to make the teeth straight, but they can also accomplish other important goals. They can be used to line up the jaw bones and give the patient a better bite. They can create space between teeth that are crowded closely together, and they can also close gaps between teeth. Some adults choose to get ceramic braces that are the same color as their natural teeth. Ceramic braces work just like metal braces, but they’re less noticeable than metal. But traditional braces made of either metal or ceramic aren’t always the best option for adults. It depends on each patient’s unique circumstances. Some patients may be able to get braces put on the back of their teeth instead of the front to hide the metal brackets. Ask the orthodontist if this would be a possibility for you.

Invisalign

Invisalign clear aligners have really had a big impact on the adult orthodontics market. Clear aligner trays allow adult patients to avoid the aesthetic challenge of having metal in the mouth. Invisalign are transparent plastic trays that are customized to fit over the patient’s teeth and slowly move them into alignment discreetly. Patients switch from one aligner tray to the next in progression to move the teeth into better alignment. They’re removable so it’s possible to take them out of the mouth for certain occasions and to eat, brush, and floss as you always have without having to change your oral hygiene habits. Some adult patients may not be able to do Invisalign treatment to straighten their teeth if they have too complex of a case, but the best way to find out what kind of treatment would be best for your teeth is to visit Fine Dentistry of Downtown Orlando to do an initial consultation.
