We Prefer Invisalign

When looking for the right orthodontic solution for crooked and misaligned teeth, there are two main options: traditional braces or clear aligners. Now, one option isn’t inherently better than the other as the right solution is based off of each individual patient’s goals and needs. But at Fine Dentistry of Downtown Orlando, we tend to recommend Invisalign Clear Aligners for a variety of different reasons. Let’s take a look at the factors to consider when deciding between traditional braces and Invisalign Clear Aligners.

What are Traditional Braces?

Traditional braces have been used by orthodontists for decades to correct crooked and misaligned teeth. Brackets are placed on a patient’s teeth with an adhesive that hardens and holds the metal bracket securely in place. The brackets are then attached with a metal wire, connecting the system together. Once an individual has braces put on, they will not be taken off for the full duration of the treatment time needed, but they will need to be regularly tightened about every five weeks in order to create the appropriate pressure to straighten the teeth gradually over time. Not only do traditional braces correct crooked teeth, but they can also help to resolve issues with a misaligned bite, or jaw problems.

What are Clear Aligners?

Clear aligners are trays that are essentially clear replicas of your teeth. As you wear the aligners, they put a gentle pressure on the teeth to slowly reposition them over time. Unlike traditional braces, they are easily removable and allow you to access your teeth much easier for cleaning and have a better eating experience! (American Association of Orthodontists, 2023). Out of the clear aligners on the market, we love Invisalign Clear Aligners.

The Advantages of Invisalign Clear Aligners

As we mentioned, clear aligners aren’t inherently better than traditional braces, in fact there are benefits that come along with traditional braces as well. Think about it, they are attached to your teeth and can’t be removed without an orthodontist, so you won’t ever have problems with misplacing them! But Invisalign Clear Aligners have a few more advantages we know our patients appreciate, and solving our patient’s dental concerns and keeping them happy throughout the process is exactly what we aim to do! Here’s a few things to consider if you’re wondering if Invisalign Clear Aligners are right for you.

Appearance and Visibility: Invisalign Clear Aligners are made from a BPA free, clear plastic, making them virtually invisible while you discreetly achieve a straight smile. Many other brands of clear aligners have lines within them that are not only visible, but negatively affect their clarity. Invisalign Clear Aligners avoid this by using a state-of-the-art production process to achieve fully transparent aligners. In addition, unlike most other brands, no attachments are required with Invisalign Clear Aligners. Instead, they have an increased surface area that covers the gingiva and also helps with challenging movements such as extrusion and angulation.

Convenience and Removability: One of the top perks our patients enjoy most about Invisalign Clear Aligners is the ability to remove them. Now when we say Invisalign Aligners are removable, we don’t mean you can take them out for days on end, in fact it’s recommended to wear them for an average of 20 to 22 hours in a day for the best results. That means you can remove the trays to eat and drink without any concern, as well as to get the best access to your teeth for brushing and flossing! When we have patients come in asking about needing to wear their clear aligners to a special event such as a school dance, or their wedding, we’re happy to advise them that they are more than welcome to attend the event without their aligners in, as long as they’re able to minimize the additional time they would go without their aligners during the weeks surrounding the event.

Eating Experience: With traditional braces, there are limitations to what you can eat. For example, no sticky, crunchy, or hard foods are allowed. This is because there is the risk that you may pull a bracket off or pop a wire out of the bracket. You may also need to be careful of what drinks you are consuming if you have white, clear, or tooth colored bands on your braces as they can become stained and discolored from certain drinks. With the ability to remove your Invisalign Clear Aligner Trays, you can eat and drink whatever you please, no disruptions or strict rules!

Superior Comfort: Of course just as with traditional braces, clear aligners will involve some pain that comes along with the shifting of teeth and the pressure being exerted upon them. However, the overall level of comfort with Invisalign Clear Aligners is much higher due to the fact that they are made custom to the shape of your teeth and consist of a gentle plastic with smooth edges that greatly reduce the potential of cuts on your tongue, cheek, and inner parts of your lip that often occur with traditional braces.

Additional Gingival Coverage: Most clear aligner brands produce aligners that only cover the teeth up until the gingival margin which is the result of a manufacturing process that is outdated. Studies have shown that when there is additional aligner coverage for the gingiva area, there is greater control, leverage, retention, coverage, and overall better results. With Invisalign Clear Aligners, you get that additional coverage, providing you with a better experience and optimal results once the treatment is completed.
